One of my clients is fairly new to cycling. He's been training well over the winter and shed some serious weight. His #1 goal, though, is to ride a century... in under 6 hours... this spring. He's already enlisted a few friends to ride support and to help him cut the through the wind - a solo century is not only tough, but boring.

We haven't picked out a venue, yet, and here's where I need your help! Does anyone know of any a century rides (100-110 miles) that take place this spring? - preferably located in the upstate (he doesn't want it to be SO easy as the flat lands of Charleston, but he also doesn't have the desire to climb Mt. Mitchell yet).

If there aren't any, then I'm going to make one... and maybe we can make it the HBW Team ride for 2010. The more the merrier!

Thoughts on that?

(P.S. I'm in pretty bad form myself, so this is going to help me prepare and get back into shape, too!)Annie Ian was a constant figure in the cycling and enduro-moto community for many years. A regular trickster and all around funny man, he loved humor and a good bike ride. This is the chance to celebrate with a group of likeminded folks, which can come together and give back as a group to a worthy cause. There will be various sections of Lexington County’s finest dirt, clay, sandy and gravel to ride. The rural rolling terrain will be very low on traffic. You be will be chased by a dog or two but don’t worry, a squirt of water will do the trick. This loop will be a character builder and a great winter day ride.

The biggest question will be what bike do I bring? Well this route will be most enjoyed on a cross bike. Set up with tires ranging from 28-42c. tires. A mtb will be equally as nice. Slap on some semi slicks or be a bad ass and show up with full knobbies. If you see yourself as THE diehard classics specialist by all means bring out that road bike. However be warned I would not ride it with anything less than 28c. tires. Racers were treated to a cold and overcast morning with the possibility of flurries or rain. A good showing of folks eager to start thier season off. A good buzz seeing all the able and willing bodies braving the elements. Teammates Eric G., Toby S. & Toby P. put down the tracks of pain. Eric pulled out a W in the Sport Men 40+ then hopped into the Single Speed class finishing in the top ten. Toby & Toby were ready to mix it up in the SS class. Toby S. pulled out a podium in 3rd & Toby P. survived to finish in 6th.Toby Porterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03822762848962031153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27582848.post-33242669709415192032009-01-08T07:23:00.008-05:002009-01-08T07:49:44.807-05:00New Year ride pics
James and Toby

Paul

eric and nick

doug, steve, toby

jamie

nick

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27582848.post-41564321622305238142009-01-04T16:29:00.006-05:002009-01-04T16:59:16.235-05:00A Rainy NYDLL '09As the green covered the radar, an uneasy feeling crept into my inards. There will be some crazy bike riding fools show up and ready to ride in the rain around the Lake. As I pulled into the DMV praying that no one shows the cars began to appear through the pines. Guess this means I'll have to man up and ride.

A much smaller group than last year, largely in part due to the precipitation I guess. There were 10 brave souls to start the '09 route. I would spoke up for a shorter hour to hour & half ride that was shot down. No takers. A bunch of bad asses I guess. Out numbered we pushed out the DMV around 10. Luckily the temps were around 50* and little to no wind. This would make the ride more bearable.

Along the route no real problems. It wasn't till the turn on Devils Backbone that some fool decided to past us on a tight bride. The a**hole then ran an on coming car off the road. Later a near miss with the fastest squirrel ever. A stop at the traffic circle. Very foggy along Hwy 391, with traffic.

Navigated the back roads of Western Chapin, to hit the special test. The test put us on Stevens Creek Rd. for some dirt road action. The dirt was more like mud and slick red clay. Overall one of the smoother sections of dirt in the area. Heading into Chapin the group kinda exploded into an everyman for himself fomation. Scattered riders heading home up Hwy 176.

Finishing up with th rain still coming down. No one yelled at me so it was a success for the ride. I think the total came to 65 miles in something like 3:20.Toby Porterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03822762848962031153noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27582848.post-19103444807812128742008-12-27T16:00:00.006-05:002009-01-01T17:24:40.583-05:002009 Lake Loop Cue Sheet (Updated 1/1)
Below is the cue sheet for the 09 route. They leave at 9:30am each Saturday morning, start at 2.5 hours in length, and steadily increase to 4 hours by the beginning of the Spring Training Series in Greenville (beginning of March). Typically, they have sprint signs, hill climbs, and are 18-19mph average. You'll find all kinds of riders at these things (the first ride in Charlotte had Frankie Andreau, two guys from DLP, and three riders from Jittery Joe's). These are free group rides, but they're NOT no-drop, so be prepared to stay with the group! Charlotte rides begin at Uptown Cycles OR Per4mance Training (check with me for details). Greenville rides start somewhere else (...I'm not sure where it is this year). - Each city is about 1:15 drive time from Columbia. - Hope to see you guys out there!Annie Hallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07396099483615376793noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27582848.post-56066266181859633022008-12-05T09:32:00.002-05:002008-12-05T09:35:07.123-05:00FATS 12/6/08Anyone interested in going out to FATS this weekend?
If so, we will be meeting at Harrell's at 7am and leaving by 7:30am.
Roll call includes Leroy and me so far.jpeltonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10747277397305359522noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27582848.post-67224456042422483902008-12-02T20:30:00.008-05:002008-12-02T21:23:53.761-05:001/04/09 Lake Loop2009 NYDR

When: 1/04/09

Where: Ballentine DMV

Well How Far: 62 (+/-) miles

What Time: Roll out 10 A.M

Why: Why Not? This is and will be a winter group ride. For the returning riders from past years the highlights will include some County Line Sign Sprints, One stop at the Traffic Circle and at least one section of dirt. I will post up the route here in a few days for those who would like to print themselves a cue sheet.

Happy Holidays
TobyToby Porterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03822762848962031153noreply@blogger.com10
