Winter Bike League

Hey guys, don't forget the Saturday morning Winter Bike League rides in Greenville and Charlotte! They leave at 9:30am each Saturday morning, start at 2.5 hours in length, and steadily increase to 4 hours by the beginning of the Spring Training Series in Greenville (beginning of March). Typically, they have sprint signs, hill climbs, and are 18-19mph average. You'll find all kinds of riders at these things (the first ride in Charlotte had Frankie Andreau, two guys from DLP, and three riders from Jittery Joe's). These are free group rides, but they're NOT no-drop, so be prepared to stay with the group! Charlotte rides begin at Uptown Cycles OR Per4mance Training (check with me for details). Greenville rides start somewhere else (...I'm not sure where it is this year). - Each city is about 1:15 drive time from Columbia. - Hope to see you guys out there!

1/04/09 Lake Loop

2009 NYDR

When: 1/04/09

Where: Ballentine DMV

Well How Far: 62 (+/-) miles

What Time: Roll out 10 A.M

Why: Why Not? You've been waiting for like 360(+/-) days. The time is drawing closer with every breath you take. Yeah that's right the annual New Year's Day Lake Loop is coming up. Please remember that this is NOT A RACE so get that ego stuff out of your system before you show up - Thanks! Feel assure this ride will have the Tobias stamp of approval - Dirt. So leave the TT bars and 18c. tires at home. Bring your sack of smiles and be ready to start the new year off 3 days late. This is and will be a winter group ride. For the returning riders from past years the highlights will include some County Line Sign Sprints, One stop at the Traffic Circle and at least one section of dirt. I will post up the route here in a few days for those who would like to print themselves a cue sheet.

Happy Holidays
Toby

Columbia-Roubaix (Repost)

Okay folks, this will serve as final warning...
Saturday is the 1st Annual Columbia-Roubaix
8:30am @ the traffic circle...Fort Jackson
Here's the map...
It has changed slightly from the map I posted a few days ago. It was changed in consideration of the folks from the N.E. who are riding in, across Ft.Jackson. It's all of 2 miles longer...!
Pass this email on to whomever you'd like...the more the merrier!!! The weather is supposed to be great, so get out of bed and enjoy a nice ride!!!

Columbia-Roubaix (11/01/08)

What: Columbia-Roubaix
90-ish km of fun through Lower Richland County
Including 7 dirt sections and a couple of choppy tarmac bits
When: Saturday November 1 @ 8:30am (Date may change)
Where: Fort Jackson Traffic Circle
Who: The more the merrier, but you MUST be willing to ride the dirt sections. If you aren't, STAY HOME!
Why: Because you may actually have a good time!
How: Road bikes

The ride will be a no-drop ride, but the dirt sections are every man, or woman, for him/herself. We'll ride 30-35kmh between sections. I figure 3-3.5 hours to do the whole ride.
The dirt sections are in good shape. A couple are smoother than some of the paved roads in Hopkins. There are NO hike-a-bike sections, nor are there any sections that will damage your bike.
I wouldn't take us down any questionable sections because I'd never hear the end of it!!!

Cross Race, Salisbury, NC 9/28

I may try to head up to Salisbury, NC to hit the first early season 'cross race. I'm just going to throw some skinnies on the 29er and race the hang out of it.

If anyone would like to carpool to split the cost of going up, let me know. I don't mind driving if we can split some gas money.

Saturday Road Ride 7:00a.m. 9/13

Tell as many guys, gals, and Toby Porter that we will have a road ride that starts from O'leary's Ortho Office beside DFMS that will leave at 7:00a.m. Pass the word. Damon, if you get this, pass the idea to some of the guys from the other side of Columbia and let's see if we can get them over here for a change. Or, if you have some email addresses, I'll contact them, since I'm just a teacher and Toby doesn't think that I really "work".

I'm down for any pace that the group wants to do; hopefully, we will have some hammer-time moments. Let's try for at least 3 hours?

****edit to the edit*****
**edit**
(removed)
I am not allowed to use certain word combinations, so I will just delete all the original edited info from this section and replace it with random ruminations. And in the first place, it was all in jest.

Hey, have you ever seen that funny commercial that has the jingle, "I've got lance in my pants..." I think it is very funny, yes? What a great jingle!

Also, remember to keep in mind that winners never cheat! Only a loser would do that!
**end edit**
****end edit to the edit****
Toby P, please be advised that we will not be taking any dirt or gravel roads along the way...sorry brother.

So, take your chamois cream out of the shower, or night stand, and let's plan a good group ride.

Big ups to Team HBW at the Charlotte Short Track Series.

Jamie battled off the Kenda squad for five races to score a 2nd place overall in the Expert Men.

Plus Damon, Toby S. & Monty all pitched in on the scare tactics. Helping lending team support to Jamie in the expert field.

Victory #1 in 08

Congratulations in race 2 & 3 of the Charlotte STXC series to the HBW racers. Saturday and Sunday's races had Jamie battling the Kenda squad from Mt. Airy NC. Out numbered, but managed to out wit and overpower most of there team. Jamie pulled out two bronze finishes for the weekend. This puts him well in the hunt for the overall mens expert series.

Damon and Toby P also made a showing in the singlespeed class. Toby pulled out a bronze and gold for this weekends races. Saturday's race had Toby off the front for the first half and slowly fading back into a battle for third place w/ a Kenda rider. Patience was the key for Sunday, Toby sat on the lead group of 4 till two to go and launched attack after attack till the line. Pulling out Victory #1 for the HBW squad in 2008.

Next STXC race is Sunday

FATS Donation Ride

Everybody,

There is a FATS benefit ride this Sunday. It is a 50 miler with a supported sag stop. Bring what you want to drop at the sag and some $$$ for trail donations. The suggested amount is $25.

I will be coordinating a carpool for those who are interested in carpooling from Columbia.

We need to get a head count so Bill and crew can support us, so let me know soon. I will post up more details as I know them.

Check out their site for all the details: http://www.sorbacsra.org/

Edit: Change of plans as I will now be leaving from Greenville. However you Columbia slackers should still come out and give me a head count. . .

Early 2008 Events

Upcoming events in the field of MTB for January & February. Winter Short Track Series to kick off Sat. 1/19 in Charlotte.

Edit: "Well folks, sorry the confusion last weekend with the weather fiasco, it looks like the weather for the kick-off for the EBB & G Winter Short Track on SUNDAY should be great. East Blvd Bar and Grill is cooking up their tasty chili for the event this Sunday. We have postponed the Jan 19 event to Feb 3, Super Bowl Sunday. For the weekend of Feb 2 and 3, we will host two races at the winter short track. Great way to burn a few extra calories so you can party hard during your Super Bowl events on Sunday evening." Promoter

Rumor has it that this is a jam up event in the Fontana area of NC. XC, Night DH & Social events galore. The "Extreme Tomato" will be there cleaning up all events. This man is feared in many areas especially the social event.

Lake Loop 2008 Recap

The 2008 Lake Loop has a huge success. A good move to the Sunday following New Years Day. The biggest turn out of any local club ride with 60 riders. We had riders from all the bike shops represented, a large group from the Columbia area, some Charlotte and Charleston making the trip. The Toby special of this ride treated all riders with 1/2 mile of dirt. A welcomed surprise for all and hated by some. Doug was kind enough to map the route with gps and post it here. I'll follow it up with a turn for turn cue sheet in a few days. For those who showed thanks and I hope you all enjoyed it.

Toby
