New Years Day After Ride

Ian Foyster Memorial Ride – New Years Day After Ride (10th Anniversary)

The 2010 New Years Lake Loop will take on a different meaning this coming January. I am inviting all my local cycling friends to come and join me to honor Ian’s memory. The route this year, due to increasing traffic and safety concerns in the Lexington and surrounding areas, will have more dirt road sections and less bridge crossings/lake views.

When: Saturday January 2, 2010 10 a.m.

Where: Lex High School. (N33*58’43.3” W81*18’35.9”) 0.4 mi West of intersection of US1 & Pisgah Church Rd (3rd Left after intersection on Olde Farm Road, 1st Parking lot on left)

Why: To honor the memory of our friend Ian Foyster who was all too suddenly and tragically taken this past year. For the folks who did not get a chance to meet Ian, you missed the opportunity to meet one heck of a fella. Ian was a constant figure in the cycling and enduro-moto community for many years. A regular trickster and all around funny man, he loved humor and a good bike ride. This is the chance to celebrate with a group of likeminded folks, which can come together and give back as a group to a worthy cause. A donation is encouraged and will be greatly appreciated. All donations will be presented to Ian’s daughter from the midlands cycling community.

This route will be a 40 mile multi surface loop. There will be various sections of Lexington County’s finest dirt, clay, sandy and gravel to ride. The rural rolling terrain will be very low on traffic. You be will be chased by a dog or two but don’t worry, a squirt of water will do the trick. This loop will be a character builder and a great winter day ride.

The biggest question will be what bike do I bring? Well this route will be most enjoyed on a cross bike. Set up with tires ranging from 28-42c. tires. A mtb will be equally as nice. Slap on some semi slicks or be a bad ass and show up with full knobbies. If you see yourself as THE diehard classics specialist by all means bring out that road bike. However be warned I would not ride it with anything less than 28c. tires. That’s that!

I just got an email from Rick up in Charlotte with the details of the upcoming Harrisburg Half Short Track Series. If you have ever done one of Rick's races, you know how good they are. If you've never tried short track, well then, here's your chance to see how much fun they are. The course is very spectator friendly.

Races are 10/31, 11/7, 11/14, 11/21. The 11/7 and 11/21 races are at night, so charge up those lights!

Here is a link to the full flier.

Hope you all can make it!

Upcoming Training Rides

Friday, 3rd--Ride starts at 6AM. Meet at O'leary's Ortho (beside DFMS)

Saturday, 4th--A ride will start at 6AM. (About 55 miles)

ALSO:
I had planned on going up to do the Fabulous Forth Metric Century in Tryon, but to save money and to get in a longer ride, I have elected to stay here and do 100 miles or so..maybe a little longer, 120? If there are any takers that want to tag along, that would be cool too.

Sat. Group Ride 6/6

Once again, a group ride is planned for this coming Saturday. Scroll down for specifics. All the info should be about the same.

Since it's so light at 6am, anyone game for moving the time back to 6 instead of 6:30? Come on...don't whine, have a little will power and get your lazy butt out the bed. You'll be back earlier, or ride longer, and you will be happy you did. (maybe)

Update: The ride will be kept at 6:30.

Come on out!

Group Ride-Saturday 5/30, 6:30a.m.

Date: Saturday, 5/30/09
Time: 6:30 a.m.
Where: Leaving from the parking lot of O'leary's Orthodontics
How Far: Varies--It's up to you. Come and start with the group and do the amount you need or can handle. I plan on doing at least 4 hours. However, each weekend we have had guys do 1.5, 2, and 3 hr rides. Whatever mileage you want to do, I'm sure there will be someone that will do it with you.
Route: Don't know; I guess we will decide that as we go. I'm thinking about Peak-Monticello Lake Loop-Pomaria-Ltl Mtn and maybe a Dreher Island loop. Should be close to 4 hours or a little more. A great comment that Clint uses: "It may not just be what you want, but by god it's all you'll want!" :-D
Pace:
Varies--Once again, it's up to you. If I had to say, I would say med/high(hardish) pace. In fact, it would be cool if the pace were a bit higher for longer on this ride. (gotta suffer to get better); however, that does not mean that we will be in hammer mode the whole time. We WILL wait for any dropped riders along the route, unless the group is told differently by those that don't want to, or can't hold the pace. So please, DO NOT think that you are slowing the group down--nonsense. Personally speaking, I love the company of my friends (and I love to see them suffer ;-)

Having said that, yes, there are certain sections of road that beg to be ridden at a high pace...for those sections, indeed, we will oblige....jump on the train, keep gaps closed, and ignore you heart rate monitor. At times, we may drop some of these:

Store stop: Ltn Mtn--bring cash if you need.

Do you Twitter? If you do, 'bikelovin' And yes, you are NOT cool unless you do! Get with it.

Group Ride-Saturday 5/23, 6:30a.m.

Doesn't seem like this blog has been getting much play recently so I thought I would post info about a group ride. We have had some great ride during the past couple of Saturdays. This past Saturday, we had several groups that did various distances and pace, with the longest being a little over 4 hours.

Ride with us, or you will look like this guy:----->>>>>

Date: Saturday, 5/23/09
Time: 6:30 a.m.
Where: Leaving from the parking lot of O'leary's Orthodontics

Store stop: Ltn Mtn--bring cash if you need. A 'tall-boy' is only $1.29.

If I can get ahold of a big thermos, I will make some coffee and have a little 'java hut' set up out the back of the Scion if you would like a cup of joe before we head out. There's nothing like a legal performance enhancer! UPDATE: In the event that we only have a few guys, or gals, I won't waste my time trying to set up a 'java hut'. Sorry.

Pass this along to others!

If you Twitter, let me know your username!

Mine is 'bikelovin' (I'm still trying to figure out all the connotations of that word...hmmm..)

After the ride: You can eat this! Yummy! Quality Protein!

Season Opener

Members of Harrells Bicycle World were in action for the season opener for the Winter Short Track Series located in Charlotte NC. Racers were treated to a cold and overcast morning with the possibility of flurries or rain. A good showing of folks eager to start thier season off. A good buzz seeing all the able and willing bodies braving the elements. Teammates Eric G., Toby S. & Toby P. put down the tracks of pain. Eric pulled out a W in the Sport Men 40+ then hopped into the Single Speed class finishing in the top ten. Toby & Toby were ready to mix it up in the SS class. Toby S. pulled out a podium in 3rd & Toby P. survived to finish in 6th.

A Rainy NYDLL '09

As the green covered the radar, an uneasy feeling crept into my inards. There will be some crazy bike riding fools show up and ready to ride in the rain around the Lake. As I pulled into the DMV praying that no one shows the cars began to appear through the pines. Guess this means I'll have to man up and ride.

A much smaller group than last year, largely in part due to the precipitation I guess. There were 10 brave souls to start the '09 route. I would spoke up for a shorter hour to hour & half ride that was shot down. No takers. A bunch of bad asses I guess. Out numbered we pushed out the DMV around 10. Luckily the temps were around 50* and little to no wind. This would make the ride more bearable.

Along the route no real problems. It wasn't till the turn on Devils Backbone that some fool decided to past us on a tight bride. The a**hole then ran an on coming car off the road. Later a near miss with the fastest squirrel ever. A stop at the traffic circle. Very foggy along Hwy 391, with traffic.

Navigated the back roads of Western Chapin, to hit the special test. The test put us on Stevens Creek Rd. for some dirt road action. The dirt was more like mud and slick red clay. Overall one of the smoother sections of dirt in the area. Heading into Chapin the group kinda exploded into an everyman for himself fomation. Scattered riders heading home up Hwy 176.

Finishing up with th rain still coming down. No one yelled at me so it was a success for the ride. I think the total came to 65 miles in something like 3:20.
