A Rainy NYDLL '09
A much smaller group than last year, largely in part due to the precipitation I guess. There were 10 brave souls to start the '09 route. I would spoke up for a shorter hour to hour & half ride that was shot down. No takers. A bunch of bad asses I guess. Out numbered we pushed out the DMV around 10. Luckily the temps were around 50* and little to no wind. This would make the ride more bearable.
Along the route no real problems. It wasn't till the turn on Devils Backbone that some fool decided to past us on a tight bride. The a**hole then ran an on coming car off the road. Later a near miss with the fastest squirrel ever. A stop at the traffic circle. Very foggy along Hwy 391, with traffic.
Navigated the back roads of Western Chapin, to hit the special test. The test put us on Stevens Creek Rd. for some dirt road action. The dirt was more like mud and slick red clay. Overall one of the smoother sections of dirt in the area. Heading into Chapin the group kinda exploded into an everyman for himself fomation. Scattered riders heading home up Hwy 176.
Finishing up with th rain still coming down. No one yelled at me so it was a success for the ride. I think the total came to 65 miles in something like 3:20.

1/04/09 Lake Loop
When: 1/04/09
Where: Ballentine DMV
Well How Far: 62 (+/-) miles
What Time: Roll out 10 A.M
Why: Why Not? You've been waiting for like 360(+/-) days. The time is drawing closer with every breath you take. Yeah that's right the annual New Year's Day Lake Loop is coming up. Please remember that this is NOT A RACE so get that ego stuff out of your system before you show up - Thanks! Feel assure this ride will have the Tobias stamp of approval - Dirt. So leave the TT bars and 18c. tires at home. Bring your sack of smiles and be ready to start the new year off 3 days late. This is and will be a winter group ride. For the returning riders from past years the highlights will include some County Line Sign Sprints, One stop at the Traffic Circle and at least one section of dirt. I will post up the route here in a few days for those who would like to print themselves a cue sheet.
Happy Holidays

Columbia-Roubaix (Repost)
Tuesday, October 07, 2008
Columbia-Roubaix (11/01/08)
90-ish km of fun through Lower Richland County
Including 7 dirt sections and a couple of choppy tarmac bits
When: Saturday November 1 @ 8:30am (Date may change)
Where: Fort Jackson Traffic Circle
Who: The more the merrier, but you MUST be willing to ride the dirt sections. If you aren't, STAY HOME!
Why: Because you may actually have a good time!
How: Road bikes
The ride will be a no-drop ride, but the dirt sections are every man, or woman, for him/herself. We'll ride 30-35kmh between sections. I figure 3-3.5 hours to do the whole ride.
The dirt sections are in good shape. A couple are smoother than some of the paved roads in Hopkins. There are NO hike-a-bike sections, nor are there any sections that will damage your bike.
I wouldn't take us down any questionable sections because I'd never hear the end of it!!!

I am not allowed to use certain word combinations, so I will just delete all the original edited info from this section and replace it with random ruminations. And in the first place, it was all in jest.
Hey, have you ever seen that funny commercial that has the jingle, "I've got lance in my pants..." I think it is very funny, yes? What a great jingle!
Also, remember to keep in mind that winners never cheat! Only a loser would do that!

Toby P, please be advised that we will not be taking any dirt or gravel roads along the way...sorry brother.

I plan to park near the horse stables on FS477 and going Clawhammer -> Maxwell Cove -> Black Mountain-> Turkey Pen -> S. Mills River -> Mullinax -> Squirrel Gap -> S. Victory #1 in 08
Damon and Toby P also made a showing in the singlespeed class. Toby pulled out a bronze and gold for this weekends races. Saturday's race had Toby off the front for the first half and slowly fading back into a battle for third place w/ a Kenda rider. Patience was the key for Sunday, Toby sat on the lead group of 4 till two to go and launched attack after attack till the line. Pulling out Victory #1 for the HBW squad in 2008.
Next STXC race is Sunday

I will be coordinating a carpool for those who are interested in carpooling from Columbia.
We need to get a head count so Bill and crew can support us, so let me know soon. I will post up more details as I know them.
Check out their site for all the details: http://www.sorbacsra.org/
Edit: Change of plans as I will now be leaving from Greenville. However you Columbia slackers should still come out and give me a head count. . .

Early 2008 Events
Edit: "Well folks, sorry the confusion last weekend with the weather fiasco, it looks like the weather for the kick-off for the EBB & G Winter Short Track on SUNDAY should be great. East Blvd Bar and Grill is cooking up their tasty chili for the event this Sunday. We have postponed the Jan 19 event to Feb 3, Super Bowl Sunday. For the weekend of Feb 2 and 3, we will host two races at the winter short track. Great way to burn a few extra calories so you can party hard during your Super Bowl events on Sunday evening." Promoter
Rumor has it that this is a jam up event in the Fontana area of NC. XC, Night DH & Social events galore. The "Extreme Tomato" will be there cleaning up all events. This man is feared in many areas especially the social event.

2008 New Years Day Ride
When: 1/06/08
Where: Ballentine DMV
Well How Far: 66ish (ballpark 66.7 miles)
What Time: Roll out 10 A.M
Why: Because the Sunday after New Years most folks will be back in town from their holiday getaways and the hangovers will be history. Besides it will give everyone time to install their new bike parts in time for the ride. Please remember that this is NOT A RACE so get that ego shit out of your system before you show up. Thanks
What History: This will be something like 7th annual - Not sure I've lost count. This route will be a traditional loop around Lake Murray in a clockwise fashion. This will be a self supported ride. So plan for one stop. Stay tuned in here for more info to come. Feel free to respond.
Update 1/4/08 11:27am
Looks like the loop will be counter clockwise this year, new loop same idea. The shortest possible route without all the sketchy highway sections. Planning on hitting the station at the traffic circle around the hwy 391 & 378 area. Something like 36ish mile point. Looks like good weather for the ride.

Lynch's Update
The erosion-prone power line climb got some attention. We're working on a re-route around that that would increase the length of the climb, add a big sweeper around the rim of a natural bowl on the power line, duck back into the woods at the top of the climb and have a really fun section before joining the trail. If you're out that way, look for the flagging at the top of the climb and try it out up to the power line. Anyhow, it's going to take some time and some sweat, but we hope it will both avoid the erosion altogether and be more fun that it is right now.
We're also going to work on a bridge over the small creek crossing before the rock section. The really tough creek crossing is going to be a challenge because it needs either a curve/corner in the middle of it, or it needs to be around 20 feet long, and will probably require some support in the middle. It's definitely going to take some planning.

Edit:
Meet at Harrell's at 8:00 Saturday morning for a ride at Lynch's.
I will leave a time for Manchester on Sunday later.
I will be in town again this weekend looking for some good rides.
Does anyone know if there are any cross races in Columbia, Greenville, Charlotte area? I want to try this cross sport. I have heard it is painful and I now have the almost right machine for it. . .
Charlotte Short Track: I am wondering what kind of course this is? Can I run my slicks and 32X15 gearing to smash the field? Are there lots of roots or is is mostly rolling?
I am ready for some races!

Urban Night Adventure
Time: 6:30pm
Location: Food Lion Parking lot on Broad River road, close to the intersection of Greystone. Or most of the time you can find the group on the River Front paved path shortly after 6:30.
Rides can run anywhere from 1.5 - 2 hours. The ride is mostly based on pedaling and not much jumping off of city dwellings. So leave the downhill gear at home. Bring your own lights and a mtb or an urban rocket if you have one.

If YOU post on here, PLEASE READ!
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Please take note that E-Designs will be going live with Harrells Bicycle World’s World Wide Web page version 1.0 very soon.
As we are trying hard to stay community oriented, we have a link set up from the website to this BLOG. What does that mean? It means that this BLOG will be representing the Harrell’s riding community and probably receiving quite a bit more traffic. So we just want to make sure that we think about representing Paul Harrell and his business appropriately when we make posts.
Neither Paul nor I think there has been a problem, we just wanted to make everyone aware of what is coming aboard.
I am also calling out for some information and pictures for those of you who post here on the BLOG. Please leave a comment under this post with the following information:
A list of all the bikes you own and ride.
Pictures of the bikes you own and ride. The best way to get us these pictures is to send them in an email to webmaster@e-designme.com. We will also need your written or verbal consent that you allow us to publish and post pictures of you and your bikes on the Harrell’s website.
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to leave a comment and I will answer them the best I can.
Thanks for your time and courteousness,
Jonathon

Sunday MTB Ride 8am
Meet time 8am
Harbison Front Lot
Distance to be determined
Come one come all, bring your mtb one gear or many gears no one counting.
Mt. Mitchell
Here are the awsome results from last Monday's Assault on Mt. Mitchell:
(full results at http://www.freewheelers.info/assault.html)
The weather was a moderate 70º - 75º from bottom to top, a bit muggy, and with a slight breeze. The sun barely poked through the grey clouds that blanketed the skies all day, and of course, the last 5 miles were through a dense, rolling fog.
Finishing 108th, Gabe rocketed up the mountain in a time of 6:10:00 - congrats Gabe!
Finishing 161st, I came up next with a respectable time of 6:27:05 - which is 0:02:32 faster than Lynn's best time, so now he has to ride again (little side bet we had going).
Rounding out the top 25%, Kevin came in 250th with a very good time of 6:55:02.
All three of us cracked the 7 hour mark, and that's great!
If anyone else came up, and I didn't write in your time, just post a reply or email me.
Good job everyone!

Lynch's Woods Volunteer Day - Sunday May 13??
Can we all check our calendars to see about getting together early on Sunday, May 13 at Lynch's Woods for a volunteer trail maintenance day? I've got an 18" bar chain saw, loppers, shovels, leaf blower, hedge trimmer.
I worked yesterday getting the latest trees out of the way, and all is clear timber-wise, except for one log that I can't remember where the darn thing is.
Probably the biggest thing needed is the new vegetation is closing in over the trail and it needs some discrete cutting back. The limbo log on the first trail after the prologue is going to take a bigger saw than what I've got.
I can supply a cookout and refreshing beverages for everybody too.

Now....if we could ever find away to get some fresh brewed coffee out there...hmmmm.
Maybe we can Jed to come on out with the Jittery Joe's traveling cafe..

So everybody is talking about doing this thing. I cannot decide as I really want to limit my races this year. These 24 hour loopy things tend to get kind of pricey as well. If I decide to do it I am going solo, I just don't feel like putting in the cooperation to making the team thing work. Plus if I ride solo, I don't effect anyone else's race. So there you have it. Now discuss and ride hard.

No Excuse For No Base 4-15-2007
So off we go to Harbison for a medium intensity 5 hour ride. I am hoping to keep it right at 10 mph so we can get close to 50 miles in. I know there will be some stops as well so plan for as many hours as your kitchen pass can afford.
LATE EDIT!!!!!!!!! Because of the forecast, we are riding Harbison around 9:15 on Saturday and Manchester at 8:00AM on Sunday.
Where: Manchester
When: 4/15/2007 8:00 AM
Why: Because we can
Who: You know you all need to
How: With your bikes duh, for me: one gear so try and keep up

Lynches Woods on Saturday 7th?
Edit: Toby and I are meeting at the Publix Parking lot (at the end of Broad River) at 8:40. We are going to head up to Newberry for about 2.5 hrs of riding. I can take one more. Give me a buzz if you want to go or leave a message on this thread. I'll check it in the morning.

Any takers to car pool?
I would like to get there fairly early so we can get back.
Let me know!

Saturday Road Ride, 7:30 a.m.
This is not an all out hammer session; however, there will be times/areas that we lay the smack down if we all feel up to it. We will NOT leave anyone behind and that is not our intention. The route is about 50 miles. We usually get back to the Parking lot around 10:30 or so. By leaving early, we can get back to do other "stuff" around the house.
Join us if you can. The bigger the group, the more time we have to rest right?

Which Race, Two Choices?
We have the one in our own backyard, "Race to the River" on April 22nd.
Or, a bigger, more competitive "Tiger Rag" on the same day.
Obviously, we could race here, but would we just be racing ourselves? No fun in that...
I may even NOT shave my legs for that one!

Assault on My Chamois
I will be in Cola this weekend, riding Saturday and Sunday. I am thinking Imight make a trip to FATS one of those days. The other will probably be MANchester.
I will post up times and what not as the week goes along.
Ok I guess good luck to the roadies this weekend. Pretend like you are on the dirt and pedal hard or something.
Edit: So FATS is closed until next week. Whoops. I am still up in the air as to where I am riding tomorrow(saturday). Maybe Lynch's, maybe Manchester. If anyone wants to ride leave me a note.
Paul and I are hitting Manchester for sure on Sunday. I am guessing around 8:00 but I will post a confirmation tonight or tomorrow.
Peace

Saturday Road Ride 7:30a.m.

Be thou wrong if you show up at any hour other than 7:30a.m. (ok...way too much Monty Python and the Holy Grail...sorry!) (The "Holy Hand Grenade" scene)
Saturday Road Ride
We will meet at Brian O'leary's office parking lot (beside DF Middle).
Hairy legged people and those that show up in mtn bike shoes will be allowed a 10 minute head start.
